Coastal Navigation for small boats is a three hour course where you will learn the basics of coastal navigation geared for sea kayakers, SUP users, and small motorboat users. You will be participating in two - 90 minute Zoom sessions, one week apart. Future Registered Maine Guides for Sea Kayaking and Tide-Water Fishing specialties should take this course.
This is the hands-on portion of the course where you will practice using the tools needed for coastal navigation, learn about charts and how to read them, and begin to see hazards associated with the waterways. You will be given access to an online course that will serve as your handbook in advance. You will have homework between the two course meetings.
What to have for the course? Reading glasses or magnifying lens, sharp pencil, scrape paper, parallel ruler, divider, and either a Casco Bay Chart or a Muscongus Bay Chart. You will need a printer for the homework assignments.
Tides, moon phases, weather conditions, and other boating uses affecting the coastal waters will be discussed and you will learn how to predict where you should navigate your craft based on those hazards and conditions.
You will be given access to an online course that will serve as your handbook in advance. It is ideal for you to read the materials included in the online course before attending class. You will have access to it after the class meets.
