This Private Map & Compass training is so that you will be safe using a magnetic compass and a topo map to navigate anywhere. This live, one day session class is held at Alice's Awesome Adventures.
This class is highly recommended for future Registered Maine Guides, volunteer trip leaders, hunters, search and rescue volunteers and those that want to be safe in the outdoors.
Price includes access to an online textbook/course to supplement your training. You will need a baseplate 2 degree compass and a Delorme Maine Gazetteer. Before class you will need to read lessons from your online textbook. After class you will access homework assignments to help you practice what you have learned.
During the training, we will work with topo maps understanding their symbols, legend, scales, and the stories they tell. You will navigate on the map by using your baseplate two degree compass and learn safety bearings. You will learn the parts of a baseplate compass, latitude and longitude location reporting, and the basics of how to hold and use your compass when going outside. Once we go outside, we'll put all you have learned to work. You'll learn some "tricks of the trade" as well as practice the basics.
If you have difficulty using your compass your Master Maine Guide instructor, Alice, will work with you to eliminate those difficulties. Please bring your lunch, snacks, and hot or cold beverages. Covid-19 protocols will be followed including use of face coverings. If you are not fully vacinated, you will be required to wear a face covering throughout the training.
