This Map & Compass distance learning training is to prepare you to be safe using a magnetic baseplate compass and a topo map to navigate anywhere. This two session class meets two weeks apart for 1.75 hours each time using Zoom meetings.
This class is highly recommended for future Registered Maine Guides, volunteer trip leaders, hunters, search and rescue volunteers and those that want to be safe in the outdoors.
Price includes access to an online course to supplement your training and act as your textbook. You will need a baseplate 2 degree compass and a Delorme Maine Gazetteer, access to the internet and a printer.
During the two sessions of training, we will work with topo maps understanding their symbols, legend, scales, and the stories they tell. You will navigate on the map by using your baseplate two degree compass and learn safety bearings. You will learn the parts of a baseplate compass, latitude and longitude location reporting, and the basics of how to hold and use your compass when going outside.
If you have difficulty using your compass and doing the homework between the two sessions, your Master Maine Guide instructor, Alice, will work with you to eliminate those difficulties.
